2025 VFW Post 3513 Patriots' Pen
3rd place winner
Andrew R. Tyson

Andrew R. Tyson, an outstanding 8th-grade student at BASIS Scottsdale, achieved third place in the VFW Post 3513 Patriots’ Pen Essay Competition. This was his first entry into the VFW Youth Scholarship Program, and he performed exceptionally well. The competition was strong and closely contested, with only a narrow margin separating the top three essays.

Andrew is one of the most impressive students we have met—polite, thoughtful, and filled with genuine optimism. His leadership potential shines, and there is no doubt he will inspire and lift those around him as he continues to grow.

All of us at VFW Post 3513 are proud of his achievement and look forward to seeing him participate in our Youth Scholarship Program again, including the Voice of Democracy competition next year.

"How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?"

Patriotism isn’t just about being proud of your country, it’s also about remembering those who have sacrificed for our country. For me, patriotism and support run deep through my veins not just because I’m an American but also because my dad proudly served in the Air Force. Through his stories, I’ve learned what true service and sacrifice mean. His service makes patriotism feel real to me.

One of the ways I celebrate patriotism is by participating in Veteran’s Day ceremonies, where we honor the people who have dedicated themselves to serving our country. At parades, we stand side by side, hands over hearts, with the national anthem playing, and I feel proud to be part of this beautiful country. I see children and adults clapping and waving signs that say “Thank you for your service!” I’m overwhelmed with joy that so many people show patriotism
and support for our veterans. By participating, I learn to honor the people who gave so much for the country we live in today.

Another important family tradition is observing Memorial Day to remember the men and women who died serving our country. Walking between the rows at the cemetery, we place American flags on the graves of fallen soldiers, which always gives me a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the lives lost. These quiet moments of reflection teach me that patriotism also means remembering the cost of our freedom. For me, honoring Memorial Day is about
gratitude and respect for their sacrifice.

When my dad was deployed overseas, our community supported my mother. Showing patriotism isn’t just about what happens on the battlefield, it is also about the families at home who stand strong in the face of uncertainty and sacrifice. I look forward to giving back to our community and supporting deployed families.

Patriotism is a responsibility that I carry with pride because of the people and values that have shaped me into who I am. I’ve come to understand that patriotism means honoring those who serve, those who’ve fallen, and those who wait at home. Patriotism lives in the memories passed down, the strength of families, and in the kindness of communities. Those experiences inspire me to give back because real patriotism is shown in how we care for each other, how we remember, and how we lead with gratitude and purpose.
